Question 1

What is the SSB Interview?

Accepted Answer

The SSB (Services Selection Board) Interview is a five-day personality and intelligence assessment used to select officers for the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. It evaluates candidates against 15 Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) through screening tests, psychological tests (TAT, WAT, SRT, SDT), Group Testing Officer (GTO) tasks, and a personal interview.

Question 2

What are the 15 Officer Like Qualities (OLQs)?

Accepted Answer

The 15 OLQs are Effective Intelligence, Reasoning Ability, Organising Ability, Power of Expression, Social Adaptability, Cooperation, Sense of Responsibility, Initiative, Self-Confidence, Speed of Decision, Ability to Influence the Group, Liveliness, Determination, Courage, and Stamina.

Question 3

How many days is the SSB Interview and what happens each day?

Accepted Answer

The SSB is a five-day process. Day 1 is screening (OIR test and PPDT). Day 2 covers the psychological tests (TAT, WAT, SRT, SDT). Days 3 and 4 are the GTO tasks and the personal interview. Day 5 is the conference where the board collectively decides recommendations.

Question 4

Which exams lead to the SSB Interview?

Accepted Answer

Candidates reach the SSB through exams and entries such as NDA, CDS, AFCAT, INET, TES, UES, NCC Special Entry, and various technical and non-technical entries for the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Question 5

How can I prepare for the SSB Interview online?

Accepted Answer

SSB Interview (ssbinterview.in) offers AI-powered mock tests for TAT, WAT, SRT, and SDT, GTO task simulators including GPE and Lecturette, and AI mock personal interviews, each evaluated against the 15 OLQs with detailed feedback reports.

Question 6

What is the TAT in SSB?

Accepted Answer

The Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) is a projective psychological test where candidates write a story based on an ambiguous picture within 4 minutes. There are 30 picture-based stories and one blank card. Assessors evaluate your narrative for themes like leadership, initiative, cooperation, and effective intelligence against the 15 OLQs.

Question 7

What is the WAT in SSB?

Accepted Answer

The Word Association Test (WAT) presents 60 stimulus words one at a time for 15 seconds each. Candidates write the first thought or sentence that comes to mind. The test measures your immediate mental associations, value system, and personality through spontaneous word responses evaluated against Officer Like Qualities.

Question 8

What is the SRT in SSB?

Accepted Answer

The Situation Reaction Test (SRT) presents 60 real-life challenging situations that a candidate may face in daily life or military service. Candidates write how they would react to each situation within 30 minutes. Responses are evaluated for practical intelligence, social adaptability, and sense of responsibility.

Question 9

What is the SDT in SSB?

Accepted Answer

The Self Description Test (SDT) asks candidates to write five paragraphs describing what their parents, teachers, friends, and they themselves think about them, plus areas they want to improve. It assesses self-awareness, honesty, and alignment between self-perception and external perception.

Question 10

What is the GPE in SSB?

Accepted Answer

The Group Planning Exercise (GPE) presents a map-based scenario with multiple problems in a village or town. Candidates individually plan priorities and resource allocation in 15 minutes, then discuss as a group to produce a common plan for 30 minutes. It tests organising ability, effective intelligence, cooperation, and social adaptability.

Question 11

What is the PPDT in SSB?

Accepted Answer

The Picture Perception and Discussion Test (PPDT) is the Day 1 screening test. Candidates view an ambiguous picture for 30 seconds, write a story in 4 minutes covering characters, situation, and outcome, then discuss in a group of 15 to arrive at a common narrative. Assessors evaluate perception clarity, teamwork, and communication.

Question 12

What is the SSB screening stage?

Accepted Answer

Stage 1 or Screening occurs on Day 1 and consists of the OIR (Officer Intelligence Rating) test — verbal and non-verbal reasoning — followed by the PPDT (Picture Perception and Discussion Test). Approximately 50-70% of candidates are screened out on Day 1. Only those who clear Stage 1 proceed to Stage 2 for the remaining 4 days.

Question 13

What are GTO tasks in SSB?

Accepted Answer

Group Testing Officer (GTO) tasks are outdoor group activities conducted on Days 3 and 4. They include Progressive Group Task (PGT), Half Group Task (HGT), Group Obstacle Race (Snake Race), Command Task, Final Group Task, Group Discussion, Lecturette, and Individual Obstacles. These tasks assess leadership, teamwork, planning, courage, and physical fitness.

Question 14

How does AI evaluate SSB test responses?

Accepted Answer

SSB Interview Academy uses Google Gemini AI to analyse your TAT stories, WAT responses, SRT answers, SDT paragraphs, GPE plans, and interview replies. The AI evaluates each submission against the 15 Officer Like Qualities, providing a detailed OLQ scorecard with strengths, areas for improvement, and actionable recommendations for your SSB preparation.

Question 15

What is the SSB Conference on Day 5?

Accepted Answer

The Board Conference on Day 5 is the final stage where the President, GTO, Psychologist, and Interviewing Officer collectively discuss each candidate. They review scores, observations, and notes from all 4 days. The final recommendation is based on a consensus. Only about 15-25% of candidates who reach Stage 2 ultimately get recommended.

Question 16

Is SSB about giving right or wrong answers?

Accepted Answer

No. SSB is a test of personality assessment, not an examination of right or wrong answers. Assessors evaluate your behaviour, responses, and overall personality against the 15 Officer Like Qualities. There are no correct or incorrect answers — only responses that reveal your natural personality traits and officer potential.

Question 17

Can training or coaching change my personality before SSB?

Accepted Answer

No. An individual's core personality has already stabilised before they appear for the SSB. No amount of training, response memorisation, or academy capsules change fundamental personality units. Coaching and practice introduce you to the test format and help refine your lifestyle, presentation, and familiarity with the process — but your core personality remains what the board assesses.

Question 18

What are the most important qualities for success in SSB?

Accepted Answer

Initiative, self-confidence, and command over language, accent, and background experience are the most important qualities that increase an individual's Ability to Influence Groups (AIG). These qualities help a candidate stand out during group discussions, GTO tasks, and the personal interview, directly impacting how assessors perceive officer potential.

Question 19

What determines success or failure in the SSB Interview?

Accepted Answer

Success depends on what an individual will actually do in a given situation — their response, their responsiveness, and the timelines with which they act. Assessors observe not just what you say, but what you do, how quickly you respond, and how effectively you take initiative. Your demonstrated behaviour in real-time scenarios carries more weight than rehearsed answers.
